The Power of Words

Since I am blogging about young adult literature I thought it appropriate that my first post begin with a quote from probably the best known YA book series: Harry Potter.

Dumbledore says in the Deathly Hallows, “Words are, in my not-so-humble opinion, our most inexhaustible source of magic, capable of both inflicting injury and remedying it.” And, as usual, Rowling got it exactly right. Harry Potter lives in a world of invisibility cloaks and werewolves and liquid luck and flying broomsticks, but of all this, the most powerful magic is words. Words are what brought the story of Harry Potter to life, and millions around the globe are entranced by their story.

Words allow you to go places you’ve never been and have adventures you’ve never had. One day you could be a pirate swashbuckling on the high seas, the next, a rising star under the lights of Broadway. You get lost in the story they tell.

Words move people. They have the power to change opinion and influence choices. Words have formed countries and torn them apart.

With words you can say things you’d never say aloud. They can give you courage to voice your opinions or to just be yourself.

So this is why I love to read, this is why I want to go into a career that involves writing- because I believe in the power of words.
